Review: Logitech H650e USB Headset

December 12th, 2013 3 comments

Logitech H650e USB HeadsetI have to admit that I’m a heavy user of wired headsets for Lync and Skype. This is really due more to the fact that spare power outlets in my office don’t exist. In fact, the fire marshal had better never show up and look behind my desk. Also, I rarely need to move more than a couple of feet from my desk chair. So the wireless benefit is somewhat lost on me. That being the case, I’m constantly checking out new headsets to see which will be the most comfortable and have the best sound quality.

Logitech’s Lync Optimized H650e headset is a dual ear USB wired headset. But not only dual ear, it’s stereo. While I’m not likely to use it to listen to my extensive hair metal music collection through them, it’s a nice touch. The headband is narrow, light, and very comfortable. The padding is soft, but not so soft that I feel the plastic headband itself. The ear cups are also very soft, and remind me of those found on my Bose QC3 noise cancelling headphones. I’ve worn the headset for several multi-hour calls, and it was comfortable throughout. The sound is fabulous.

One cool aspect of this headset is that the USB cable is flat instead of round. This might not seem like much, but take it from someone who routinely has at least four headsets hanging together. This 7 foot cable just doesn’t tangle. And the integrated control head provides for hook and mute buttons – both of which are Lync integrated. Pressing the mute button on the control head mutes the Lync client – not just the headset. There are also volume up/down buttons on it as well.

Logitech H820e presence indicatorThe mic boom is a flexible rubber that’s easily positioned in any angle you need. It has great, natural sound, so I’m told by those I speak to with it. One cool feature on this is that at the end of the boom where it connects to the ear piece, is a presence indicator. This is designed for people who are behind you. They can see your presence and know you’re in a call. One might think that would be evident merely by having the headset on, but I would point back to the headset being stereo. So a user could be listening to non-call audio. It’s only illuminated when in a call/conference/meeting. A neat idea that would be beneficial in a Dilbert style cube farm.

I really like this headset. In fact, my old favorite, the Blackwire 720, has been pushed to standby status as I use the H650e pretty much exclusively. Great sound, comfortable, and a non-tangling cord are all wins. For a list of $89.99 USD, it’s a fabulous unit that should suit most chair jockeys that don’t need to get away from the desk while on the phone.

Customizing the Lync Server 2013 Meeting Page

December 11th, 2013 5 comments

In Customizing the Lync Server 2010 Meeting Page, I showed how simple it was to update the Lync Server 2010 Meet page with your organization’s logo. Here’s some info for updating the Lync Server 2013 pages.

Here we see the page with the default “Lync Web App” text image.

original LWA page

That test image file is called LyncWebApp_logo.png. It’s a 350×68 pixel 32 bit .png file. You’ll find the image in two folders: one for the external web site, and one for the internal website:

  1. c:\Program Files\Microsoft Lync Server 2013\Web Components\LWA\Ext\Images\LyncWebApp_logo.png
  2. c:\Program Files\Microsoft Lync Server 2013\Web Components\LWA\Int\Images\LyncWebApp_logo.png

If you’re going to swap out the image, it’s much easier if you overwrite the existing file with your custom file of the same name: just backup the original file first. This will eliminate the need to dive into the code that writes the page. Just create a new file of the same size, and save it into the appropriate folders.

The image background is not actually white. It’s a light gray with an RGB value of R:247 G:247 B:247. If you want to match the blue on the left, it’s R:3 G:110 B:202.

Once you overwrite the existing file, restart the Lync Server Web Conferencing service using either the Services.msc tool, or by using the following in PowerShell:

Restart-Service RTCDATAMCU

Once the service has restarted, you can check out the Meet page by creating a Meet Now, and going to the meeting URL on a machine without the Lync client (to avoid having the Lync client immediately attempt to join the meeting, which would close the Meet web page).

updated LWA page

If you’re hard core and want to tweak or completely overhaul the web page itself, the CSS style sheets are available for the external and internal sites at:

  1. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Lync Server 2013\Web Components\LWA\Ext\Styles
  2. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Lync Server 2013\Web Components\LWA\Int\Styles

Just make sure you back everything up before making changed. Also, I have not paid much attention to if these files get overwritten during a Cumulative Update installation. So keep copies handy in case you need to re-apply your changes.

Lync Client November Update Released

November 13th, 2013 No comments

On November 10th, 2013, Microsoft released the November 2013 Update for the Lync 2013 desktop client. Some welcome news with bug fixes, and some new features. Some of the new features have been requested for quite a while, and others were a welcome surprise. Let’s take a look.

Video recording options

If you’ve ever tried to do a video recording of a Lync meeting, you know that the video quality has not been as high as you’d like. This update changes that. In the Recording options page, we now have options for 480p and HD options for 720p and 1080p. The recording still captures at 15 frames per second (fps). Obviously, if everyone on a conference is using 1080p, the size of the resulting file is going to be quite a bit larger than if you use lower settings. One other thing to keep in mind is that your camera needs to support these resolutions.

Photos in Instant Messaging stream

Next up is something seen in other instant messaging platforms. And that is user avatars in the IM stream. I don’t really see the need for this in a peer-to-peer conversation, but in a conference, I can certainly see this being beneficial. There is no option to disable this at this time, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see a client side option in the future.

Photo Options

This is one option I’ve been asking for ever since the Lync 2010 option was removed in Lync 2013. Fellow MVP John Weber even submitted it on the Lync IdeaScale site. The ability to define a URL to an avatar. This allows you to put a picture out on a server and have others, such as federated contacts, see it instead of the “no photo” image.  This also helps clear up the issue where a user configured a URL in the Lync 2010 client, then migrated to the 2013 client, only to find they could no longer change it, or even remove it.

You can also choose an existing picture to be copied to Active Directory, too.

Lync 2012 client photo options

This is the only option that requires us to also do something on the server. We need to add a Policy Entry to our client policies in order to enable the setting. If we don’t, then users don’t see the option in their client. To make the change, run the following in Lync Server Management Shell:

$PolicyEntry=New-CsClientPolicyEntry -Name EnablePresencePhotoOptions -Value true
$ClientPolicy=Get-CsClientPolicy -Identity Global
$ClientPolicy.PolicyEntry.Add($PolicyEntry)
Set-CsClientPolicy -Instance $ClientPolicy

Once this change is made, the Lync client will need to pick up the changed policy either by signing out and back in, or waiting 8 hours for the client to refresh the policy.

PChat Escalation

This was one I wasn’t expecting. When you’re in a PChat room, you now see a new button at the bottom of the client. When you click the button, it opens a Lync meeting with everyone currently in the PChat room. It also pastes the unique meeting info into the room. This information is unique & generated each time the feature is used. One click to a meeting with everyone. Very cool. And all members in the room don’t need to have this update installed in order to participate in a meeting created by this feature.

Free/Busy issue resolved

I know a lot of people have been waiting for this. A previous update caused free/busy info to not automatically update your presence. This update resolves that problem.

  • The inline attachment is read as “image” instead of as “attachment” by UIA-based screen reader such as Narrator.

Download

Download the update and the prerequisite files from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2825630. Make sure you read the UPDATE INFORMATION section on some prerequisites required for the update.

But wait, there’s more! New icon

Not really related to this update, but more to the “Patch Tuesday” updates. KB2837643 changes one of the icons in Lync. Before the update, the Calendar tab looked like this:

After installing the update,

I think the new icon is a little more intuitive as to its purpose.

Cleaning Up Removed OCS Servers Before Migrating to Lync 2013

November 12th, 2013 No comments

Migrating a customer from OCS 2007 R2 to Lync 2013 recently, I came across an issue that needed some extra work before I could continue.

When I opened the OCS 2007 R2 management console, I noticed a server listed under “Earlier Server Versions”.

legacy server

I verified that the server no longer existed in Active Directory or DNS. The customer confirmed that it was an OCS 2007 server that had long been removed from service. This server would likely cause issues with publishing a Lync 2013 topology since OCS 2007 isn’t supported in a Lync topology. This server needed to be removed. Unfortunately, there was also no other servers in the environment with the OCS 2007 (non R2) management tools installed. And the OCS 2007 R2 management tools can’t remove the server. This meant that the only way I could remove this server is via our friend ADSIEdit. If you’ve got this issue, follow along as I show you how to remove it. Remember, we’re deep into Active Directory internals here, so tread lightly. Read twice, delete once. And for God’s sake, have a backup of AD.

Depending on where the OCS Global Settings are in Active Directory dictates where to connect to in ADSIEdit. These settings can info can either be in the root domain System container, such as if the environment originally held LCS and/or OCS 2007 servers and the settings were never migrated, or the Configuration container, where they would be if they had been migrated, or if OCS 2007 R2 was installed in a greenfield deployment. If you’re Global Settings are in the System container, open ADSIEdit and select “Configuration” in the Select a well known Naming Context field.

config container

If your Global Settings are in the System container, as was the case for this customer, Select the “Default naming context”.

Expand the domain, then expand CN=System, then expand CN=Microsoft, then expand CN=RTC Service. Inside that, expand CN=Pools. You should see the pools and servers listed. Highlight CN=Pools on the left. On the right side, right-click on the server you wish to remove, and choose Delete.

delete server

Once that’s done, close ADSIEdit. Once AD replicates, open the OCS 2007 R2 Management Console and check. The “Earlier server versions” branch should now be empty.

All Lync 2013 Cmdlets and the Default RBAC Roles That Can Use Them

October 28th, 2013 1 comment

Here is a Lync Server 2013 version of my DefaultCmdletsByRBACRole spreadsheet that I originally did for Lync Server 2010. It shows every cmdlet available to you in both Lync Server 2010 and Lync Server 2013, and which RBAC roles have rights to run them by default. You can see which cmdlets are 2010 only, and which are 2013 only. The TechNet descriptions and a version specific link are listed for each. The list is current through Lync Server 2013 with October 2013 Cumulative Update.

One Liner – Find Users Whose SMTP Address Doesn’t Match Their SIP Address

September 5th, 2013 1 comment

This one liner will list all users who have both SMTP email addresses (which appear in the Windows Email Address filed on their AD account), and a SIP address, but they don’t match. This is helpful in identifying users who may be contractors with their  own email address at their respective company, but have SIP addresses on your system. It’s also helpful in locating users who have typos in one of the two, or who are inadvertently assigned an incorrect SIP domain.

Get-CsAdUser | Where-Object {($_.WindowsEmailAddress -and $_.SipAddress) -and ($_.WindowsEmailAddress -ne ($_.SipAddress -replace "sip:",""))} | Select-Object DisplayName,WindowsEmailAddress,SIPAddress

This yields results such as

DisplayName       WindowsEmailAddress                    SIPAddress
----------- ------------------- ----------
Laurie Lederhouse llederhouse@fourthcoffee.com sip:llederhouse@contoso.com
Eileen Alfini     eileena@fabrikam.com sip:ealfini@contoso.com
Mike McGrath mmcgrath@wingtiptoys.com sip:mmcgrath@contoso.com
Gavin Parmar gparmar@contoso.com sip:goarmar@contoso.com

In this example, we see that the first three have different SMTP domains than SIP domains. In the last user, we see that the username part of the addresses is different, but the domains are the same. If you want to strip out the “sip:” from the SIPaddress column, we can add a little formatting and come up with

Get-CsAdUser | Where-Object {($_.WindowsEmailAddress -and $_.SipAddress) -and ($_.WindowsEmailAddress -ne ($_.SipAddress -replace "sip:",""))} | Select-Object displayname,windowsemailaddress,@{Expression={$_.sipaddress -replace "sip:"};label="SipAddress"}

Script: New-CsClonedPolicy.ps1 – Clones Existing Lync Server 2013/Skype for Business Server 2015 Policy To a New Policy

September 3rd, 2013 10 comments

Lync 2013 logo 128x128Description

Some Lync 2013/Skype for Business 2015 policies have few parameters, like User Services Policies. Others, like Conferencing Policies, have a considerable number of parameters. Often, organizations need to have different policies for different groups of people. Many times, there is only one or two settings that are different. Creating a new policy based on an existing policy can be time-consuming. There are some cool utilities like Kevin Peters’ cool StareCompare, which shows where policy settings are different between two policies. But what if it was just easier to “clone” an existing policy to a new policy, and then just change the few settings that need changing? NextHop has a nice article on how to just that. You export the current policy to an XML file, edit the file, then import it into a new policy. Must faster, but still requires some manual editing of an XML file. Ya know why I don’t like that method? Not enough PowerShell! So what I did was write a script that automates that method, and allows you to clone an existing policy to a new policy in one step. The script exports the existing “source” policy, updates the XML, then imports into the “target” policy. One command to make life easier. Then you can use the appropriate “set” cmdlet to tweak the new policy. And it works with all Lync 2013/Skype for Business 2015 policy types, including Archiving, Client, ClientVersion, Conferencing, ExternalAccess, HostedVoicemail, Location, Mobility, NetworkInterSite, PersistentChat, Pin, Presence, UserServices, Voice, and VoiceRouting. The script only works with Lync Server 2013/Skype for Business 2015 policies, and only runs on PowerShell 3.0 or higher (Windows Server 2012 or later).

The script supports Get-Help, so run that if you need additional info.

Syntax

New-CsClonedPolicy.ps1 [[-ExportFolder] ] [[-ExportFile] ] [[-SourcePolicyName] ] [[-TargetPolicyName] ] [[-PolicyType] ]
[[-Description] ] []

An example would be

New-CsClonedPolicy.ps1 -SourcePolicyName global -TargetPolicyName "new policy" -PolicyType ConferencingPolicy

This would clone the global conferencing policy into a new policy called “new policy”. Acceptable values for PolicyType are “ArchivingPolicy”, “ClientPolicy”, “ClientVersionPolicy”, “ConferencingPolicy”, “ExternalAccessPolicy”, “HostedVoicemailPolicy”, “LocationPolicy”, “MobilityPolicy”, “NetworkInterSitePolicy”, “PersistentChatPolicy”, “PinPolicy”, “PresencePolicy”, “UserServicesPolicy”, “VoicePolicy”, and “VoiceRoutingPolicy”

When specifying a TargetName, keep one thing in mind. Using just a string value will create a user level policy. If you need to create a site level policy, specify “site:”, such as “site:Redmond” to create a policy for the Redmond site.

Installation

Execution Policy: Third-party PowerShell scripts may require that the PowerShell Execution Policy be set to either AllSigned, RemoteSigned, or Unrestricted. The default is Restricted, which prevents scripts – even code signed scripts – from running. For more information about setting your Execution Policy, see Using the Set-ExecutionPolicy Cmdlet.

Donations

I’ve never been one to really solicit donations for my work. My offerings are created because *I* need to solve a problem, and once I do, it makes sense to offer the results of my work to the public. I mean, let’s face it: I can’t be the only one with that particular issue, right? Quite often, to my surprise, I’m asked why I don’t have a “donate” button so people can donate a few bucks. I’ve never really put much thought into it. But those inquiries are coming more often now, so I’m yielding to them. If you’d like to donate, you can send a few bucks via PayPal at https://www.paypal.me/PatRichard. Money collected from that will go to the costs of my website (hosting and domain names), as well as to my home lab.
